This past week interns were introduced to one of our favorite data collection tools, the Marine Debris Tracker App! It started off with a brief overview on the history of the app, organizations working on it (NOAA), and how impactful this resource can be when utilized by many!

For most of our interns, this was their first introduction with a term called

 CITIZEN SCIENCE.

“The collection and analysis of data relating to the natural world by members of the general public, typically as part of a collaborative project with professional scientists” -Google

Citizen Science, is one of the main reasons behind why this app holds so much potential. Interns collected a total of 769 pieces of litter at Oakland Tech, and are able to use this information to create a baseline of data that they will analyze to create targeted service learning projects to tackle waste issues at the source.

Not only does this app create grand opportunities for our interns, but it fosters a pathway of global connectivity of environmental stewards world wide. The challenge of waste issues is big a one, but it is no match to the impact that our daily actions have when multiplied by many!
