Program Associate Jenna Topper spent the whole day this past Monday at Oakland High School presenting to over 20 classes! A total of 688 students got to learn about this year’s internship programs and were invited to apply.

On Wednesday, February 2nd, Oakland High interns gathered together to host their own Campus Cleanup. Weeks prior to the event they prepared; dividing into working groups to organize their event. At the end of the day, they collected over 8pounds of litter on campus in their litter hotspot areas! Here are some of the highlights from that day straight from the interns’ perspectives:

As we get closer to the end of the first semester, interns are preparing to launch their small group project plans to reduce litter from reaching the marine environment. After collecting data and forming connections between marine debris, the Lake Merritt watershed, and themselves, interns have started four separate plans to implement throughout the year to address marine debris. Zero Litter Hallway Projects are 3 week research project that gives interns and introduction to conducting independent investigations and exploring solutions to address an issue they decide to address. This year Oakland High investigated 5 different hallways on their campus, implemented solutions to try and reduce litter in their hallways, and discussed how they incorporate this work into a larger project as the year progresses.  Read below about Wendy’s small group hallway project:
