Students Attend Brower Youth Awards 2014
EarthTeam has been bringing youth to the Brower Youth Awards for many years now in hopes of inspiring EarthTeam students by the work, passion and words of their peers. We're incredibly lucky to have this premiere event recognizing and honoring youth involved in environmental projects right here in our backyard. This past Tuesday October 21st, we brought 11 students from Oakland, Skyline and Richmond High School together to make the trek from the East Bay to downtown San Francisco for the 15th annual Brower Youth Awards and as usual, it did not disappoint!
Students were treated to performances by the Oakland Youth Chorus and the SF Jazz High School All Stars as well as introductions from local environmental leaders and mentors Annie Leonard (Story of Stuff, Greenpeace), Adam Werbach (Yerdle), Barbara Brower (David Brower's daughter), Julia Butterfly Hill and Rue Mapp (Urban Afro). But the most exciting and inspiring part of the evening was hearing directly from the six young environmental leaders being honored as the newest Brower Youth Award winners.
Short films about each leader and their projects preceded speeches that ran the gamit from inspiring us all to seek solutions in the face of adversity to reclaiming our right to be joyful.
All of the young award winners shared precious wisdom that will be reverberating in the heads and hearts of the EarthTeam students and staff for months to come. See more photos of our evening here.
Here's to hoping one day we'll see an EarthTeam student up on that stage!
