Million Kilowatt Hour Challenge

WELCOME TO THE MILLION KILOWATT HOUR CHALLENGE (MKHC)! AS PART OF THE FREE FUN AND COMPETITIVE CHALLENGE, YOU'LL JOIN WITH OTHER TEENS (6th–12th grades) TO PROMATE ENERGY CONSERVATION IN YOUR HOME, SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY BY GETTING INVOLVED IN PROJECTS THAT FOSTER LEARNING AND ENERGY CHANGE. THE CHALLENGE IS TO GET ENOUGH ENERGY ACTIONS BY BAY AREA TEENS TO MEASURE UP TO A MILLION KILOWATT HOURS SAVED. SEE POINT SYSTEM BELOW. SO ONE SMALL ENERGY ACTION OR MANY ALL CONTRIBUTE TO GETTING CLOSER TO THE MILLION. To make the real goal of energy change even more appealing we've included some contests. All contest entries are also counted as energy actions.

All participants will receive a Certificate of Appreciation signed by Senator Barbara Boxer. All classes, clubs and schools that have partipants will be listed on the website under Participants.$500 PRIZES will be awarded to winners of the Best Poster and Best Essay Contests, and to the group with the Most Participation (calculated by the Kilowatt Hour-Saving Points system). Kilowatt Hour-Saving Points will be awarded for each student, class, club or school activity—read further on to learn more about scoring Kilowatt Hour-Saving Points.

Our goal is simple: We’re challenging Bay Area teenagers to get involved in MKHC Action Projects that collectively score 1,000,000 Kilowatt Hour-Saving Points between October 1, 2002 and March 15, 2003. 1,000,000 kilowatt-hours (1 million kWh) is roughly equivalent to the energy used by 150 average California households during one year. (Remember, that’s the "average" California home, during "average" California conditions. Broaden the idea to the entire U.S., and the world!) If the total of all MKHC student actions measured with MKHC points reaches 1,000,000 Kilowatt Hours then WE WILL HAVE MET THE CHALLENGE.

Start by requesting a speaker from our Energy Experts Speakers Bureau…or jump right in with one of the Action Projects listed on the EarthTeam website…or create your own idea and submit it to the MKHC!

Spread the word about energy change! Download the MKHC flyer and distribute it to friends…post in your school… ask local businesses to post! (It’s been designed for color printers.) Deadline for all MKHC Action Projects is March 15, 2003.

Request an Energy Expert Speaker to talk about energy change to your class or club!

All MKHC participants receive a Certificate of Appreciation from Senator Barbara Boxer.
