EVENT DETAILS
10:00-11:00 Commemoration Rally
All are invited to this spirited multicultural celebration which pays tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. This year's rally will  feature keynote speaker The Honorable Barbara Lee, youth speakers, poets, choirs, and dancers from the Oakland community. Some seating reserved for EarthTeam participants.
The rally is held at the ILWU Warehouse Local #6 Hall in Oakland, California and is sponsored by Martin Luther King Jr. Rally Committee, Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Center and East Bay Regional Parks.

11:00-11:45  Free Lunch at Union Hall

12:00-3:00  Restoration at Arrowhead Marsh
After lunch we'll head to MLK Jr. Regional Shoreline Park for volunteer restoration work, naturalist-led walks along the marsh, and readings from Dr. King.  Restoration activities will include planting, removing non-natives and cleaning up the shoreline. No previous experience is necessary. This project fulfills volunteer service requirements.

Bus Transportation:
EarthTeam will provide FREE bus transportation for groups of 15 or more students. Bus pickup locations are determined based on reservations, which are first-come, first serve. If you are interested in requesting bus service, please RSVP by Monday, January 10th.

Rally at The International Longshore and Warehouse Union #6 Hall
99 Hegenberger Road (at Pardee), only 5 minutes from the restoration site

By Car:  From I-880, exit at Hegenberger Road and go toward the Oakland Airport.   Follow Hegenberger to Pardee Drive.  The Union Hall is on the Northwest corner of Hegenberger and Pardee.  Look for a colorful building with murals.

Public Transportation: BART to the Coliseum Station. Take AC Transit Bus #50, Hegenberger toward the Oakland Airport. Get off at Hegenberger and Pardee; turn right on Pardee.  The Union Hall is on the Northwest corner of Hegenberger and Pardee.  Look for a colorful building with murals.

Restoration and Nature Walks at Arrowhead Marsh

By Car: From I-880, exit at Hegenberger Road and head West toward the Oakland Airport. Turn right on Doolittle, Right on Swan, and then Left into the gate marked Martin Luther King, Jr. Shoreline. Follow road to the very end and park near the wooden observation structure. We will meet here; look for the Save The Bay truck.

Public Transportation:  BART to the Coliseum Station. Take AC Transit Bus #50, Hegenberger toward the Oakland Airport. Get off at Hegenberger and Pardee; turn right on Pardee and left on Swan (walk about 10 minutes).

Go about 700 feet and turn left at the brown sign that says Martin Luther King, Jr. Regional Shoreline; follow the road to the very end. Look for the wooden observation structure on your left, we will meet here.

What To Bring For Restoration:

1)  Be prepared for the weather and be prepared to get dirty. Dress in layers, wear long pants, close-toed shoes to protect your feet, bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
2) All students must bring EarthTeam permission slips, alreadysigned by their parent or guardian. Permission slips available on our website or by request.
3) Bring your own water bottle to help us reduce plastic waste!

EarthTeam and Save the Bay will provide you with tools, work gloves and extra water.

Rain:
The restoration program may be cancelled in the event of heavy rain. To confirm, please call 510-520-1111 after 8:00 am, the morning of the event.
