Is There Enough Fish in the Sea?

Robert Mazurek
Monterey Bay Aquarium
October 29, 2002

"The declining state of marine fisheries is one of the top issues, if not THE top marine conservation issue today". Prompt and effective action at all levels is needed to reverse this trend. Thomas Huxley wrote in 1883 that "all the great sea-fisheries are inexhaustible." Today we know that this is not true, and that pressures from a fast-growing human population has severely depleted many fisheries around the globe. The United Nations estimates that 11 of the world's 15 most important fishing areas are either fully fished or are overexploited. Also, some fish, such as many shark and rockfish species are so depleted that commercial extinction might be just around the corner."

Robert Mazurek has been a fisheries biologist and science writer with the Monterey Bay Aquarium since March 2000. Before joining the Aquarium, Robert was the science writer in the communications office at California State University-Monterey Bay. He has also written feature science articles for publications such as Popular Science, Smithsonian, The Boston Globe, New Scientist, and Rodale's Scuba Diving Magazine, among many others. Robert also lead a team of biologists from the University of California's Predatory Bird Research Group, in reintroducing peregrine falcons back into Lake Tahoe Basin National Forest.

00:35:12 Guest 3 has joined the chat.
00:35:17 Robert As for declining fish populations, acording to the National Marine Fisheries Service, over 70% of fish populations are either fully fished or overfished. As populations are growing we are eating more fish and there are not enough left to sustain out appetites.

00:45:19 JeRrY y are salmon being caught soo much
00:45:22 Robert Right, they are on the top trophic level. But the major reason sharks are overfished is because they are long-lived, sometimes not reproducing until they are 10 or 12 years of age. And they reproduce very few young.
00:45:31 strongarm85 becouse they're easy to catch
00:45:40 strongarm85 and they sell good

00:46:02 JeRrY oooo
00:46:06 SheShe So what's being done about the problems with sharks
00:46:13 strongarm85 well the easy to catch part has to do with what time of the year it is
00:46:14 chubbyy alo
00:46:18 tHiS bE aUdReY LaMb i think we should have like a field trip to a marina or something like that so we all can see all differ kinds of animals or sea animals
00:46:25 Robert Salmon are very sustainable. The reason is that most states use hatcheries to replenish populations. In Alaska over 3 billion salmon are grown in hatcheries and released every year into the ocean
00:46:26 strongarm85 if its spawning season its as easy as walking over and picking them up at time
00:46:27 BioKnight didn't we do that?
00:46:39 strongarm85 8 picking up sharks, are you nuts?
00:46:45 strongarm85 7 yeah, hes nuts
00:46:46 Guest has joined the chat.
00:46:46 amy no, salmon
00:46:52 Jeff M isn't farming salmon also being debated as detrimental to natural populations?
00:46:53 BioKnight sharks arn't as aggressive as we make them seem
00:46:55 Jump Trooper has joined the chat.
00:47:02 Robert As a matter of fact, Alaska doesn't call it salmon fishing they call it salmon ranching.
00:47:26 JeRrY when do u expect the number to be dangerously low if we dont do anything bout it
00:48:03 BioKnight How important is the fish industry in the overall food market?
00:48:14 Guest has joined the chat.
00:48:29 kitEkat has joined the chat.
00:48:29 strongarm85 6 probably pretty low, but including shellfish it has to be big
00:48:32 Robert In most cases sharks are not more agressive than other fish. If you dive with sharks you quickly realize this and get over your fear. There are only 3 or 4 species of sharks that have been known to attack people. And that's out of over 50 different species.
00:49:02 strongarm85 5 Diving with sharks is easier said than done

00:49:16 Guest 3 has joined the chat.
00:49:16 BioKnight if we did that we would cut alot of jobs
00:49:17 strongarm85 4 some of us like fish
00:49:21 BioKnight not to mention hurt our diets severly
00:49:21 Robert Fish make up about 30% of the American diet of protien, which is more than most countries.
00:49:21 strongarm85 4 that too
00:49:25 Jeff M actually, the fish industry is huge as i understand. not necessarily in the US, but world wide billions depend upon the ocean for their livelihood and survival
00:49:27 chubbyy so them we would be saving the planet
00:49:36 Guest 4 has joined the chat.
00:49:36 BioKnight also, there is already a food crisis in some areas, to cut more food would make that worst

00:50:26 Guest has joined the chat.
00:50:27 kitEkat ok.. so what is the solution to the declining population of fish??
00:50:28 chubbyy well that is a huge generalization
00:50:40 Jeff M if we killed off shrimp, it would be awful. but they are lower in trophic level, and reproduce more rapidly, so are probably better than some larger fish for consumption
00:50:45 Noah has joined the chat.
00:50:45 Robert In most cases no fisheries target sharks. they are mostly caught as bycatch in other fisheries. Does anyone know what bycatch means?

00:52:20 Robert Somebody mentioned shrimp. Shrimp are plentiful, but they way we catch them is very distructive. We scrape large nets across the bottom of the ocean and destroy the habitat of many different organisms. For ebryone 1 pound of shrimp that ends up on the dinner table, about 10 pounds of other fish are killed in the process.

00:57:17 Robert It depends on what fish you are talking about. But the bottom line is there are a lot of regulations, but no one is enforcing them. It's a big ocean out there and it's tough to watch everyone fishing.
