Building Trails at the Pinole Native Plant Garden

Earth Team Pinole and Friends of Pinole Creek Watershed team up to build a path through the Pinole garden.

Pinole interns teamed up with Ann Moriarty of Friends of Pinole Creek Watershed to begin installation of a path running through the Pinole native plant garden. Building trails isn’t easy, but definitely made possible with everyone’s combined efforts and hard work! Check out our progress below:

Step 1: Interns outlined the path using string and wooden stakes. Later they dug out the old mulch along the 100 foot route where the path would go.
Step 2: Interns removed tape from old cardboard boxes and laid the cardboard pieces down to sheet mulch along the path. This method will help prevent invasive plants from sprouting up along the trail. The cardboard will eventually decompose in the soil.
Step 3: Once the cardboard was laid down, the old mulch that was dug out previously was shoveled back on top to keep the cardboard in place. Moss rock stones that were purchased from Sugar City in Pinole were used to outline both sides of the path.
Step 4: Once the stones were in place, new mulch was added on top to give the garden a fresh new look.
Community members stopped by throughout the day to compliment the team on their hard work and cheer everyone on. The path in the garden can be used by the public to get a closer view of the Native Plants that have been planted in the previous two years.
