From July 15th to July 19th, 2024, a group of Earth Team interns embarked on a beautiful and enriching five-day backpacking adventure in Point Reyes National Seashore. Earth Team, in collaboration with Big City Mountaineers, organized this expedition for current interns to impart crucial outdoor skills, deepen their connection with the environment, and promote personal growth.
The journey began on the morning of July 15th at the North Berkeley BART station. Here, the eager participants gathered for an orientation led by BCM Interim National Program Director David Lee, BCM trip leader Chowder, and Earth Team’s Noah Slager and Darius Roffe. After discussing trip details and packing their gear, the group set off for their first destination within Point Reyes.
Upon arrival, the interns began a series of essential lessons. They learned about land acknowledgment, mastered fundamental backcountry skills such as building a tent and using backcountry stoves, and were educated on Leave No Trace principles. The instruction continued with health and safety protocols, including proper waste management techniques and procedures for emergency situations. As evening approached, the group worked together to prepare their first outdoor meal before settling in for the night.
The following morning marked the true beginning of their backcountry experience. After breaking camp and receiving instruction on proper backpack loading, the team ventured deeper into the wilderness. Over the next four nights, the interns explored a new campsite each evening, honing their skills in teamwork and outdoor survival. They practiced navigation techniques, water purification methods, and refined their camp cooking abilities, among other vital backcountry skills.
A highlight of the trip was the opportunity to witness the awe-inspiring humpback whale migration. Throughout their journey along the coastal trails, the group was treated to the magnificent sight of dozens of whales breaching and spouting offshore, adding an incredible connection to wildlife to their adventure.
On the final evening, the interns gathered at a picturesque site overlooking the Pacific Ocean. As the sun dipped below the horizon, they participated in a heartfelt ceremony, celebrating their achievements and expressing gratitude for the chance to forge a deeper connection with nature and each other.
