Every year on December 5th, International Volunteer Day serves as a reminder of the transformative power of collective action. Established by the United Nations in 1985, this day honors the invaluable contributions of volunteers while encouraging more people to join in creating positive change.
At Earth Team, we epitomize International Volunteer Day by empowering teens to become active stewards of the environment. From creek cleanups to native plant restoration and community outreach, our programs offer hands-on experiences that foster both environmental awareness and practical skills. For instance, the recent Monarch butterfly habitat restoration at Oyster Bay Shoreline helped to restore and maintain this vital ecosystem, our interns not only learned about environmental stewardship but also experienced the profound sense of accomplishment and connection that comes from working together.
Volunteering is more than just completing tasks—it’s about building relationships, fostering growth, and creating shared purpose. Whether it’s working together to restore a habitat or leading a sustainability workshop, volunteer efforts spark local change that ripples outward.
One memorable experience in my life was volunteering at the San Francisco Academy of Sciences. I enjoyed helping visitors explore the rainforest exhibit and sharing how ecosystems are interconnected. Leading a mini activity on ocean conservation was the highlight—I showed visitors how small changes, like reducing plastic use, can make a significant impact. Volunteering wasn’t just about giving back; it helped me grow, build confidence, and connect with others with a passion and empathy for our Earth.
