On January 20th, Earth Team interns from Berkeley, Richmond, Skyline, and Pinole High Schools participated in the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service along the North Richmond Greenway, hosted by the Contra Costa Resource Conservation District, The Watershed Project, and Urban Tilth.
With thousands of volunteers from the local community and the greater Bay Area, Earth Team interns took part in various service projects, including litter pickup and sorting, weeding, mulching, green infrastructure maintenance, and mural painting.
Earth Team interns used OVTA (On-Land Visual Trash Assessment) methodologies to conduct an itemized sort and count of all the litter collected by volunteers across the workday, working from a station set up in the middle of the Greenway.
Interns got to practice what they have learned about green infrastructure to work in bioswales and planter boxes as a way of increasing their communities resilience to climate change.
