On May 4, 2024, a group of dedicated Earth Team interns from Arroyo High School, Castro Valley High School, and San Leandro High School embarked on an unforgettable hike at Mission Peak in the East Bay Area. The day was led by Earth Team Coordinator Healey Cayabyab and provided a blend of outdoor adventure, learning, and team-building.
With excitement in the air, the group hit the trail, eager to explore the natural beauty of Mission Peak. Along the way, they engaged in hands-on learning, identifying native plants and animals, and honing outdoor skills. One of the most valuable lessons was practicing how to read maps and navigate the trail as a team, which added an extra layer of collaboration to the day’s activities.
As the group made their way up the trail, the sun shone brightly, encouraging them to keep moving toward their goal: the summit of Mission Peak. Reaching the top was the day’s most triumphant moment. Standing at the summit, the students were rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the East Bay. They enjoyed lunch together, taking in the scenery and celebrating their hard work.
It was a day of discovery, not only of the landscape but also of each other and the value of working together. Thanks to the State Coastal Conservancy’s Explore the Coast Program for making this trip possible!
