Empowering Youth for Cleaner Communities: Earth Team Interns Make a Difference
This year’s Earth Team interns from San Leandro, Castro Valley, Arroyo, and San Lorenzo High Schools have truly shown what it means to be environmental leaders. With passion and determination, these young advocates rolled up their sleeves and set out to make their communities cleaner and greener. Recently, a group of interns from San Lorenzo, San Leandro, and Castro Valley came together for two major litter clean-up events—one at the Hayward Shoreline and another along the Castro Valley Creek Trail. Their efforts not only helped clean up vital natural spaces but also highlighted the ongoing need for proactive community engagement and action to tackle pollution.
The Hayward Shoreline: A Vital Ecosystem at Risk
The Hayward Shoreline is a beautiful stretch of land that holds immense ecological value. It provides a critical habitat for migratory birds, wildlife, and a variety of plant species. But like many natural areas near urban environments, it is under constant threat from pollution, particularly litter.
On September 28th, Earth Team interns and volunteers gathered for a clean-up effort to collect a range of waste, including plastic bottles, food wrappers, and cigarette butts—debris that often originates from nearby urban areas.
This litter can have devastating effects on local wildlife. Birds and marine creatures frequently mistake small plastic items for food, leading to dangerous consequences such as ingestion, entanglement, and death. Stormwater runoff from city streets also carries this trash into the Bay, creating a persistent challenge to maintaining the health of this vital ecosystem. By organizing a clean-up at the Hayward Shoreline, Earth Team interns didn’t just collect trash—they actively protected the habitat of local wildlife, learned about the importance of preserving natural areas, and witnessed firsthand how small actions can make a big difference in safeguarding the environment.
Castro Valley Creek Trail: Protecting Local Waterways
The Castro Valley Creek Trail is a popular spot for walking, biking, and connecting with nature, but, like many urban trails, it is also frequently littered with debris. Over time, this waste builds up along the trail, and much of it eventually washes into the creek, impacting water quality and the wildlife that depends on it.
On September 21st, Earth Team interns took to the trail to help remove accumulated trash, from plastic bags and wrappers to larger pieces of waste.
The interns’ work along the Castro Valley Creek Trail was not only about cleaning up trash but also about raising awareness of the broader environmental issues associated with litter. Pollution that collects on streets and in parks eventually finds its way into our waterways, where it degrades water quality, harms aquatic life, and pollutes the larger watershed that feeds into the San Francisco Bay. By participating in this clean-up, Earth Team interns took direct action to restore the beauty of the creek and protect the health of the entire watershed.
The Power of Youth Action: Why Interns Lead the Charge
For these Earth Team interns, the clean-up events were about much more than picking up litter—they were about taking responsibility for their environment and showcasing the power of youth leadership in creating positive change. Many of the interns are from local communities in Hayward, Castro Valley, and San Leandro, and they understand the importance of protecting their own neighborhoods. Whether they live near the shoreline or hike along the Castro Valley Creek Trail, these young people know that the health of their communities is tied directly to the health of their local ecosystems.
These clean-up events also served as valuable educational experiences. Interns learned about the impact of pollution on ecosystems, the importance of waste management, and how small, everyday actions can have a big impact. Earth Team is not only helping these interns make a difference in their own neighborhoods, but also empowering them with the knowledge and confidence to take on larger environmental challenges in the future.
Environmental Justice: Cleaning Up for the Community
Litter clean-ups play a crucial role in addressing broader issues of environmental justice. Many urban communities, like those in Hayward and Castro Valley, bear the disproportionate burden of pollution. These areas are often located near high-traffic zones, industrial facilities, and under-resourced neighborhoods, which makes them particularly vulnerable to the harmful effects of pollution. As a result, public spaces like parks, streets, and waterways frequently accumulate litter, but the communities most affected by these pollutants are often the ones with the least access to the resources needed to address them.
Earth Team’s clean-up efforts offer an opportunity to restore these public spaces, protect community health, and improve quality of life. By involving local youth in these efforts, Earth Team ensures that environmental justice issues are recognized and acted upon. Through their clean-ups, Earth Team interns are not only helping to create cleaner, healthier environments—they are raising awareness of the impacts of litter and pollution, and advocating for a more equitable distribution of environmental resources and protections.
