This week, interns from both Arroyo and San Lorenzo High Schools presented to the SLZUSD Board Health and Wellness Committee. After spending the year leading a variety of environmental projects, interns were excited for the opportunity to share their work and experiences with district leaders.
A major focus of the presentation was the interns’ ongoing Tire Road Wear Particle (TRWP) research. Students explained their research process, sampling methods, and key findings. They also discussed practical actions schools could take to help reduce TRWP exposure for students and staff. One site identified with elevated concentrations of TRWP-associated metals was the San Lorenzo High student parking lot. While not a permanent solution, interns recommended increasing sweeping and cleaning in the lot to reduce the buildup of road dust and potential TRWPs.
Interns also highlighted their extensive habitat restoration efforts throughout the year. They shared accomplishments at VA Alameda Point, where they placed more than 200 shelters in California Least Tern nesting habitat. Students also showcased photos from restoration events at the Hayward Shoreline during the MLK Day of Service and at Castro Valley Creek for Earth Day.
Overall, the presentation was a valuable opportunity for interns to strengthen their public speaking and professional presentation skills while demonstrating the impact of youth-led environmental action.
