On October 5, students from Skyline High School attended a cleanup event at Dimond Park in partnership with the Friends of Sausal Creek. After spending the prior week discussing watershed health and habitat restoration, interns worked alongside public volunteers to remove invasive plants.
Interns pulled Himalayan Blackberries and Cape Ivy, which crowd out native plants and disrupt the habitat for rainbow trout living in the creek. They will return to the creek in January to plant natives which will be able to thrive in the space they cleared.
This work formed a vital part of restoring this section of the creek. Thank you to the Alameda County Clean Water Project and the North American Association for Environmental Educators for making this project possible!
